Newsletter Issue #626: Does an iPhone 4 to iPhone 4s Upgrade Make Sense?
November 28th, 2011So the manager at our favorite pharmacy takes out a white iPhone 4s from his pocket and announces, sadly, “I really didn’t need this. My iPhone 4 was working just fine, and Siri isn’t of much use to me.”
I asked him if he’d tried it much, and he said, “yes, but I don’t need to ask about the weather. I just tap twice and there it is. Besides, how would it look if I started to talk to my phone while working?” With a smile, I thought about his customers staring at him as he filled their prescriptions.
Of course, Siri isn’t the only attraction of an iPhone 4s. The interface feels noticeably snappier than its predecessor, and the camera is good enough to have made more and more people set aside their regular point and shoot models. Wasn’t that sufficient to justify the upgrade?

Since I haven’t used Siri I can’t comment a lot about it, but it sounds like it might be an extremely useful thing for people who need to use their iPhones while driving or in other hands-free situations. I. m. h. o., the camera was one of the weakest features of the iPhone and for some people the improvement might well justify the upgrade. Let’s hope that when enough of these new cameras become available from suppliers Apple won’t lose any time in putting them in iPod Touches and iPads as well!
If you enjoy using the camera, mobile gaming, and want a device that’s “future proof” due to the power of the A5 processor, irregardless of Siri, then yes it’s a good upgrade. I live in Canada & don’t have official access to Siri but I upgraded to the 4S and really enjoy it.
