Newsletter #415 Preview: Who Needs Leopard? What About Mac OS 10.6?
November 11th, 2007If you believe some of the things written about Leopard in the past week or so, you may consider it the buggiest system upgrade ever! But, as with all things of this nature, that impression is a huge exaggeration.
During Leopard’s first weekend on sale, some two million copies were moved as retail upgrade kits and preloaded on some new Macs. Since then, it’s fair to say hundreds of thousands of additional copies have probably been shipped, and the vast majority of Mac users who have Leopard have installed it.
It’s also a certainty that any point-zero release will have at least some annoying bugs. Some of these issues were pushed aside in the rush to ship the product — though Apple would never admit that. Others were simply not granted a sufficient amount of seriousness, couldn’t be duplicated or weren’t anticipated.
So you can bet that, sometime in the next few weeks, there will indeed be a 10.5.1 update, and that, every couple of months, further maintenance updates will be delivered. This is something you have to expect, and you might feel angry at Apple for not shipping a more robust product, but the fact of the matter is that most of the Leopard early adopters have had excellent upgrade experiences, and I can be counted as part of that number.

I also adopted Leopard on day one. Installed it on my Dual 2.5 G5 and my experience…a few very small glitches here and there but on the whole a seamless and good experience. On the whole I have noticed a fantastic speed increase in booting and also with 3d apps such as Cinema 4d (probably down to the enhanced OpenGL support).
This upgrade was nowhere near as traumatic as upgrading OS 6 to 7, 7 to 8 or 8 to 9. Well done Apple!
I upgraded (as usual) as soon as 10.5 was released. It has worked great. I am not surprised at some of the negative press because why write a rant about everything working well??? One thing about the internet that we need to keep in mind is that it is an equal opportunity medium- everyone gets to have their say whenever they want. Thus, some things appear magnified because everyone with any kind of problem gets to post it with no censorship (as it should be). Of course, if you believe EVERYTHING you read on the internet then I do own a controlling interest in a New York City bridge that I am willing to part with… 😉
It’s easy to reconcile. Every operating system release sucks, and every maintenance release is pathetic. There, happy now? 😀
About that bridge, are you sure it’s not the one I already own? We’ve got to compare our deeds. 🙂
